SPINDALE 2010 HILL CLIMB

September 25, 2010

Hot! Hot weather was forecast for the weekend and for once the weatherman was absolutely correct. With the temperature forecast for the mid 90’s we left our overcoats at home.

On Friday morning most of the attendees assembled at the host hotel and drove to a local Farm Museum and then viewed a car collection at Bennett Classics. After lunch at Mudbones the group drove to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. Even when we got into the North Carolina mountains the weather was HOT! Everyone had a great tour in spite of the unseasonably hot weather.

On Saturday morning the streets were blocked by the local police and we started setting up the timing equipment. Hill climbers and spectators started arriving about 9 a.m. and we were off to the races! Ron Kelly and his son Michael drove from Texas directly to the hill climb site to join other attendees from AL, TN, NC, SC, FL and OH.

New F.A.S.T. member Bill Bowe from Rutherfordton, NC drove his 1930 Roadster to win the S-1 class.

Michael Kelley from Royse City, TX drove Ron’s rusty 1928 Roadster Pickup to win the ST-1 class; beating out Diane Hodge from Forest City, NC.

The ST-2 class was a battle between father and daughter. Mark Hodge and his daughter Hannah from Forest City, NC both drove Marks’s 1930 Fordor with the father winning out over the daughter.

Jeff Hodge from Forest City, NC brought his 1930 AA Truck and was unchallenged in the ST-3 class.

David Young from Hendersonville, NC drove his “new” 1931 Roadster to beat all comers in the M-1 class

Harold Miller from Greenville, SC, another new hill climber, ran alone in the M-2 class with his 1930 Fordor.

Bob Lane from Charleston, SC raced his 1929 Roadster unchallenged in the M-3 class.

The SP-1 class again was the most heavily contested event. Ron Kelley from Royse City, TX blew away all challengers as he wound up his Speedster to around 7000 rpm (as reported by Ron). George Miller from Clayton, NC was sitting on the sidelines after blowing the engine in his Olds 455 OHV Speedster – can you say broken crankshaft? Anyway, Don Higgs from Jacksonville, FL asked if George Miller could drive his Speedster; Wouldn’t you know it – George beat Don’s time by 0.001 seconds!.

The SP-2 class, after George Miller’s blown engine, turned out to be a battle between father and son. This time the son, Bobby Hoover from Oviedo, FL, beat out his father Dave driving Elvira to win the class and to take home King of the Hill honors.

Christy Fontenoy beat out her mother and cousin to capture Queen of the Hill honors.

On Friday evening the Awards Banquet was held at the First Wesleyan Church with a catered dinner provided by the First Wesleyan ladies. Entertainment was provided by Carolina Jasmine a teen and sub-teen girls Bluegrass group.

Our hosts for the weekend were the Thermal Belt Model “A” Club. The club, particularly Jeff and Mark Hodge did a lot of work and planning making sure everyone had a great weekend in the Forest City, NC area. Thanks – we all had a blast!

Did I forget to say it was HOT?
